“Navigating Graduate school during COVID19 pandemic”

Feb 26th, 2021

1 - 5 PM

COVID19 pandemic has presented graduate students with challenges unseen before. Students are attempting to navigate the challenges differently. We, the Genetics & Genomics Group (G3), an umbrella student organization serving graduate students in the Interdepartmental Genetics and Genomics (IGG) program would like to invite you to an afternoon session to have a discussion on some of these challenges and how to navigate them.

1.00 - 2.00 PM: “ Are you taking care of your mental health?”

Many of us have experienced mental health issues due to being more isolated during the pandemic, so how can we take steps to address the struggles we have been going through?

Tara OhrtTara Ohrt, a pre-doctoral intern from ISU Student Counseling will present on the topic of mental health.  In her spare time, Tara enjoys spending time with family and friends, puzzling, reading, baking, and geocaching.

Meredith TittlerMeredith Tittler is a predoctoral intern at Iowa State’s Student Counseling Services.  She completed her graduate work at ISU’s Counseling Psychology doctoral program. Her clinical interests include grief, group therapy, interpersonal concerns, and social justice work.  She is also passionate about research - specifically developing and testing interventions and strategies that increase white individuals’ engagement in social justice behaviors.  In her free time, she enjoys running, gardening, and improving her cooking skills.

2.10 - 3.10 PM:  “LinkedIn for Academics: How to get noticed outside the ivory tower”

Career development in graduate school is often focused on a continuing career in academia, so how can those of us interested in an industry, non-profit, or government work build contacts and network to find where we fit?

Karin Lawton-DunnKarin Lawton-Dunn, M.S. (she/her/hers) is the Director, Graduate and Postdoc Career Services in the Graduate College at Iowa State University since 2015. She coaches graduate students and postdoc scholars on their career planning journey for their post-ISU career. Karin has an extensive understanding of the challenges facing international students looking for employment in the U.S.

3.20 - 4.30 PM: “Transitioning to an industry position during a pandemic”

Transitioning from graduate school to industry can be intimidating even during normal times, but facing that transition in these times seems overwhelming.

Tes DennisonTes Dennison completed her Ph.D. in Genetics with a minor in Statistics in July of 2020 at Iowa State. She then started as a Corn Breeder with AgReliant Genetics in October. Outside of science, her hobbies include gardening, volunteering in her community, and traveling.
